What to Do When Someone Passes Away
The steps you take after someone has died will depend on the circumstances.
If Someone Dies Unexpectedly
If someone dies and it was unexpected, or they haven’t visited their GP in the last 14 days it is a possibility the coroner may become involved and an inquest or post mortem may be performed. If this happens, we are here to support you and your family and we can liaise with the coroner to make provisional funeral arrangements. There are several useful websites which provide additional information:

Registering A Death
For a funeral to take place the death will need to be registered in the district/area it occurred. This usually happens within 5 days. To register a death the registrar needs a copy of a death certificate signed by a doctor which will show the cause of death. Further information available at:
www.hull.gov.uk/visitor.births-and-deaths/death-registration
www.eastriding.gov.uk/living/deaths/registration
After the death has been registered you will be issued with an official death certificate; the registrar will then send a ‘green form’ to your chosen funeral director which means they can begin making funeral arrangements. We are here to offer guidance for you and your family throughout what is a very difficult time. The thought of making funeral arrangements can be a very daunting task; we understand this. For this reason, we can offer a home visit if that would make you more comfortable.
